Suspect arrested in Sunday shooting in West Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —

A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting on Sunday afternoon in West Asheville, Asheville Police said in a news release.

Around 3:09 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, APD officers responded to a grocery store on State Street to investigate of a report of a gunshot wound. According to the release, officers found a man lying on the sidewalk nearby with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Officers gave emergency medical care before emergency personnel arrived, and then the man was transported to Mission Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.

According to the release, an investigation determined that there had been a verbal dispute between two people, and following an altercation a suspect got out of a vehicle and shot at the victim before fleeing. The gunshot victim walked to the intersection of Hanover and Stewart streets, where the officers found him on the sidewalk.

Police reportedly reviewed surveillance video and were able to identify a suspect vehicle, and later Sunday evening found a man in the vehicle on Granada Street who subsequently was charged.

The vehicle occupant, Quantay Leontay Love, 34, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was booked into Buncombe County Detention Facility and placed on a no bond hold (ineligible for release) due to the Pre-Trial Integrity Act, the release stated.

Asheville Police detectives still were seeking information on the case and encouraged members of the public to send anonymous tips by texting TIP2APD to 84711, or using the TIP2APD smart phone app. People also can call APD at (828)252-1110.
