ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has launched a cyclosporiasis public information dashboard after additional cases of the parasite-borne disease were detected across the state.

The database, the Cyclosporiasis Cases and Outbreaks Dashboard, will be updated every Tuesday with the latest cyclosporiasis information, including infections and hospitalizations since May 2026 and their increases from the week prior.

Currently, 718 cases and 24 hospitalizations have sprung from cyclosporiasis since May 1, 2026. Patient interviews have indicated that parsley and cilantro are among the most common sources of illness, though an official source has not yet been identified.

“NCDHHS continues to work closely with our local, state and federal partners to gather information and identify possible sources,” the health department stated in a press release.

Causes and prevention

Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by the parasite cyclospora, with symptoms that include explosive diarrhea. The parasite is often carried on produce.

Rinsing and washing fruits and vegetables can help remove some of the parasite, but does not guarantee safety, the NCDHHS said. Cyclosporiasis can be prevented, meanwhile, by cooking vegetables to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Eating locally grown produce is also considered a safer alternative to wider-distributed foods.

“While some individuals may not experience symptoms, most people usually feel sick about one week after exposure to the parasite. Contact your health care provider if you are experiencing severe or persistent diarrhea or believe you may have cyclosporiasis,” the NCDHHS said. “Cyclosporiasis can be treated by antibiotics. It is also important to prevent dehydration by drinking lots of water or drinks with added electrolytes.”

For more information on cyclosporiasis, visit the dashboard at www.dph.ncdhhs.gov/programs/epidemiology/communicable-disease/foodborne-illnesses/cyclosporiasis/cases.
