ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Icy road conditions following a winter storm prompted several school systems in Buncombe County and the city of Asheville to alter schedules for Monday, Feb. 2, shifting students to remote learning or closing campuses altogether.

Asheville City Schools announced it will operate as a remote learning day because of hazardous travel conditions. District officials said students should follow their assigned remote learning plans available on the Asheville City Schools website, with additional information to be shared by schools. The district said student and staff safety remains its top priority.

Buncombe County Schools also moved to a remote learning day paired with an optional teacher workday, citing widespread travel impacts across the region. Teachers are expected to post assignments in learning management systems by 10 a.m. Monday or may have already sent paper packets home with students. Students will have up to five school days to complete assignments and will be counted present once work is submitted.

The district said meal service will be available from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at several schools, including A.C. Reynolds Middle School, Black Mountain Primary, Emma Elementary, Estes Elementary, Leicester Elementary, North Windy Ridge Intermediate and Candler Elementary. Students may eat at no charge, while meals for parents will cost $5.25.

Buncombe County Schools officials also thanked facilities and maintenance staff, who began clearing snow Sunday from entrances, car rider lines and bus lots across all 45 schools.

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College announced it will remain closed Monday because of snow and road conditions.

Officials across the region urged families and staff to remain cautious as winter weather continues to affect travel.

Schools impacted by weather include:

A-B Tech Community College: Closed
Avery County Schools: Closed/optional teacher work day
Buncombe County Schools: Remote learning day/optional teacher work day
Haywood County Schools: Remote learning day/optional teacher work day
Henderson County Schools: Closed/optional teacher workday
