ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Attic Salt Theatre Company has announced “Venus in Fur” as their next production. The show, written by David Ives and directed by Attic Salt Artistic Director Jeff Catanese, will open next month.

“Venus in Fur” will run from April 17-26 at Attic Salt. Performances will be held on Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Find tickets at www.atticsalt.org.

“Venus in Fur” stars Alex McDonald Villarreal as Thomas Novachek and Kate McGunagle as Vanda Jordan. Costumes are by McKinney Gough and stage management is by Mikhale Sherrill. The show is recommended for audiences age 16 and up.

Unveiling “Venus in Fur”

“Venus in Fur” premiered off-Broadway in 2010 and moved to Broadway in 2011, garnering a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. The show follows an arrogant theater director named Thomas Novachek, to be played by Alex McDonald Villarreal in the Attic Salt production, who is attempting to find a female lead for his adaptation of the novel “Venus in Furs,” an 1870 work exploring sadomasochism and female dominance in sexual relationships. Novachek is impressed by the audition of Vanda Jordan, to be played by Kate McGunagle, who demonstrates a deft comprehension of her character. Over the course of the show, the power dynamics in the audition oscillate back and forth, mirroring the material Novachek has adapted.

The show is in keeping with the interesting, boundary-pushing theater Attic Salt has previously performed, including last year’s “Miss Julie” and “The Thanksgiving Play,” as well as other work by Ives.

“Attic Salt has already produced David Ives’ ‘All in the Timing,’ and the writing in this one is just as sharp, daring and funny, in the way only Ives can create,” said Catanese in a press release.

“This play really makes you think about how we see ourselves and how we see others,” Catanese said. “I hope everyone will come out for this smart, sexy, and very funny play.”
