ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Federal officials have approved an additional $64.2 million to support recovery projects tied to Tropical Storm Helene, bringing the total in recent months to more than $228 million.
The latest FEMA funding will support nearly 30 projects across North Carolina, including road repairs, water system stabilization and utility restoration.
The largest allocation, $35.4 million, will go to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for road repairs in Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Caldwell, McDowell, Mitchell, Watauga and Yancey counties.
Other major grants include:
- $10.7 million to Asheville for temporary water supply stabilization at the North Fork and William DeBruhl water treatment plants.
- $4.6 million to Buncombe County for emergency protective measures to stabilize landslide-prone slopes.
- $3.5 million to Beech Mountain for repairs to the Buckeye Lake dam, the town’s water treatment plant and local water systems.
- $3 million to Haywood Electric Membership Corp. for repairs to power transmission and distribution systems serving six western counties.
- $2.5 million to Lake Lure for replacement of the town’s Flowering Bridge.
- $1.5 million to Asheville Christian Academy for facility repairs.
- $1.5 million to Skyline Telephone Membership Corp. for utility and fiber optic line repairs across four counties.
- $1.3 million to Marshall for replacement of its Town Hall.
FEMA is reimbursing at least 90 percent of eligible costs through its Public Assistance program, which funds response and recovery work for state and local governments.
Since Jan. 20, 2025, nearly $390 million in Public Assistance reimbursements have been approved to aid North Carolina’s recovery from Helene.
