ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville will be in the international spotlight this week when finance ministers, central bank governors and other officials from the world’s leading economies gather for G20 meetings.
The G20 Finance Track meetings are scheduled for Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, bringing international finance officials to Western North Carolina as the region approaches the second anniversary of Tropical Storm Helene.
The meetings begin Aug. 29-30 with finance and central bank deputies. Finance ministers and central bank governors will meet Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced the Asheville location in February, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying the selection reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to the “revitalization and resilience” of Western North Carolina as it continues to recover from Helene.
The G20, or Group of 20, includes 19 countries as well as the European Union and African Union. The Finance Track focuses on economic and financial issues, while the G20 also holds a separate leaders’ summit addressing broader global issues.
Treasury’s agenda for the 2026 Finance Track includes promoting economic growth, modernizing financial regulation, understanding global economic imbalances, improving debt transparency and restructuring processes, supporting digital assets, improving cross-border payments, addressing payment fraud and scams, and promoting financial literacy.
An economic boost
The meeting is also expected to bring hundreds of visitors to Asheville.
Vic Isley, president and CEO of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, estimated about 500 people from around the world would attend the meetings, with early projections of $1.5 million to $2 million in direct spending benefiting area businesses.
The gathering comes as Asheville’s tourism industry continues its post-Helene recovery and gives the city an opportunity to showcase Western North Carolina to an international audience.
Protesters plan G20 events
The international gathering also is prompting local organizers to call attention to what they say is unfinished work nearly two years after Helene.
Members of the WNC Alignment Table and other community organizations are planning several events around the G20 meetings to highlight the region’s recovery and call for additional assistance.
A banner drop is planned from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, along I-240 and I-26.
Organizers also plan a 6 p.m. press conference Friday at the former Vance monument site, which they refer to as the “Nonument.”
On Saturday, Aug. 29, organizers plan to line Merrimon Avenue in the 500-700 blocks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with signs supporting their message about Helene recovery and economic policy. Organizers describe the demonstration as nonviolent.
A community summit focused on grief and gratitude is planned for 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Pack Square Park. Organizers say the event will honor what the community has accomplished since Helene while mourning what was lost.
The group also plans to recognize local organizations and individuals through a “Community 20,” or C20, initiative honoring people who contributed to the recovery effort.
Organizers say their events are intended to celebrate the people and community organizations that helped Western North Carolina recover while pressing for additional assistance.
Security and logistics
The planned demonstrations could add another layer of traffic and public-safety considerations during the four-day gathering.
The G20 meetings will put Asheville and Western North Carolina before finance officials from around the world at a time when the region continues its recovery from Helene.
The United States’ G20 host year will culminate with a leaders’ summit Dec. 14-15 at Trump National Doral in Miami.
For Asheville, the meetings offer an opportunity to showcase a region rebuilding after Helene while also highlighting the challenges that remain nearly two years after the storm.
