ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The N.C. Division of Water Resources has recognized 63 drinking water treatment plants for exceeding state and federal standards in 2024.

The facilities earned the state’s Area Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) Award, which promotes higher performance among surface water treatment systems. The program focuses on reducing turbidity, or cloudiness in water, that can interfere with disinfection and allow harmful microbes to thrive.

Twenty of the plants also received the “Gold Star” designation for earning the award at least 10 consecutive years. Those systems serve communities ranging from Boone and Maggie Valley to Raleigh and Greenville, supplying drinking water to more than 2.8 million North Carolina residents.

While all public water systems must meet strict federal and state standards, these facilities went above and beyond to protect public health, Division of Water Resources officials said in a news release.

The “Gold Star” awardees include Asheville, Hendersonville, Cary/Apex, Greenville Utilities Commission, the town of Wilkesboro, two Raleigh facilities and plants in Mount Airy, Boone and Weaverville, among others.

The full list of 2024 AWOP award winners includes: Appalachian State University, Charlotte Water’s Lee S. Dukes and Vest plants, City of Asheville’s William DeBruhl plant, Brunswick County Northwest, Johnston County’s East and West plants, Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority and Western Carolina University, among others.
