ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Home projects don’t start with blueprints; they start with questions. The WNC Build and Remodel Expo, produced by the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains (BABRM), brings those questions directly to our region’s experts.

Slated for March 21–22 at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center, the Expo covers everything homeowners are curious about, from big-picture conversations around custom homes and major renovations to practical advice on smaller upgrades, maintenance, energy efficiency and outdoor living.

The Expo also highlights the creative and educational side of building. Through the Designer Showcase, visitors can explore styled spaces by local designers, while the “Pawrade of Homes” celebrates student-built dog houses and workforce development in the trades.

“The goal of the Expo is to give homeowners great access to local building professionals,” said Jessie Edington, events manager for BABRM. “It is an opportunity to learn what is possible and how to approach projects with confidence.”

Here are five key things homeowners can expect to learn at the Expo.

1. How to plan a successful build or remodel

Whether you are building a new home or remodeling an existing one, the hardest part is often figuring out where to start. At the Expo, homeowners can learn how to budget, plan timelines and make decisions that support their long-term goals.

“Many homeowners come in with ideas about layouts, finishes or updates they want to make, but they’re not always sure how to turn those ideas into a clear plan,” Edington said. “The Expo helps break down the process so they can make confident decisions from the start.”

For example, foundation specialists like Mountain Valley Foundation Services can help homeowners understand how site conditions may shape a project, while experts with Pella Windows and Doors can explain how product choices affect energy performance.

2. Which materials and products make sense for WNC homes

From luxury vinyl and tile supplied by Carpet One Floor & Home to garage doors from Fairview Door Sales, the Expo showcases a wide range of building and remodeling products. Homeowners can compare options side by side and ask detailed questions about performance, durability and maintenance.

“Seeing sample materials in person and speaking directly with the people who use them every day is invaluable,” Edington said. “It helps homeowners understand what will work best for their space and their goals.”

3. What home maintenance tasks matter most

Not every homeowner attends the Expo with a major build or remodel in mind. For many, the focus is on keeping their home in good shape and avoiding costly repairs.

“Preventive maintenance is one of the most overlooked parts of homeownership,” Edington said. “The Expo gives people clarity on what actually needs attention so they can protect their investment over time.”

Vendors such as LeafFilter Gutter Protection, for example, can help homeowners see how preventative care like keeping gutters clear can reduce long-term repair costs and protect a home’s overall health. And companies like Roof Maxx can talk through ways to extend the life of an existing roof and plan ahead for future repairs.

4. How to create stylish and sustainable outdoor spaces

Outdoor living is a major priority for many Western North Carolina homeowners. At the Expo, attendees can learn about designing outdoor spaces that are functional, attractive and environmentally responsible from experts like Legacy Decks and Carolina Outdoor Lighting.

“We see a lot of interest in native plants and low-maintenance garden design,” Edington said. “The Expo connects homeowners with professionals who can explain how to make outdoor spaces that are sustainable and easy to care for.”

5. How to choose the right local professionals

Selecting the right builder or remodeler is one of the most important decisions a homeowner will make. The Expo creates an opportunity to meet professionals face to face and compare different approaches, whether you’re looking for a custom remodeler like Semper Fi or a generator installer like Carolina Energy Systems.

“These conversations build trust,” Edington said. “Homeowners can ask real questions and get a sense of how different professionals communicate and manage projects.”
