20-year-old motorcyclist dies after crash one week before 21st birthday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Police Department is investigating a fatal vehicle collision that resulted in the death of Subastion James Samuel Cruz-Galyon, a 20-year-old motorcyclist from Canton, N.C.

Cruz-Galyon, born on July 8, 2005, died just one week before his 21st birthday.

According to an APD press release, officers responded to the crash site around 10:43 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, around the 1700 block of Hendersonville Road.

“The preliminary investigation indicates a group of motorcycles was traveling north on Hendersonville Road at a high rate of speed,” APD said. “As one motorcycle entered the intersection, it struck a passenger car turning east onto Turtle Creek Drive.”

The collision caused Cruz-Galyon to be ejected from his bike. Injured, he was transported to Mission Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

APD said next of kin has been notified and that the investigation into the crash is ongoing. After the investigation is completed, APD will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office.

Remembering Subastion James Samuel Cruz-Galyon

In his obituary, Cruz-Galyon was described as “a loving son, devoted friend and ambitious young man whose dreams were as big as his heart.”

Cruz-Galyon graduated from Pisgah High School and worked as a presser for Wilsonart. He was passionate about motorcycles, and often gathered with friends at Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack, where his biker friends will embark on a commemorative “Ride for Subastion” at 11 a.m., Friday, July 10.

“He was known for his infectious smile, sense of humor and special ability to lift the spirits of everyone he met,” the obituary said. “Subastion’s passion for motorcycles was unmatched. The sound of his bike and the freedom of riding brought him some of life’s greatest joys and friends. He treasured spending time with friends, often gathering at Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack, sharing laughter and creating lasting memories. He had a love for his Jordan Shoes, took great pride in his hair, and dreamed of traveling to Japan, reflecting his adventurous spirit. He also had a deep love for sports cars, especially the Nissan 370Z.”

Cruz-Galyon’s funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 11, at Smoky Mountain Cremations and Funeral Service. A visitation for friends will be held by the family from noon to 3 p.m. prior to the service.

A GoFundMe has been organized to pay for funeral and memorial expenses. As of 3:30 p.m., Monday, July 6, the fund has already raised $7,860 of a $13,000 goal, courtesy of 104 donations.
