WEAVERVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Hundreds of first responders lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 climbing the 110 floors of the World Trade Center. In honor of their sacrifice, a Weaverville fitness center will host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, challenging the community to ascend 110 flights in remembrance.

110 flights, one hour slots

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held at Workout Anytime Weaverville, 129 Weaver Blvd.

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 11-12, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Workout Anytime Weaverville, 129 Weaver Blvd.

“It’s a total of 2,071 steps that members and people within the community can attend and attempt and do their best,” said Dan Williams, Workout Anytime general manager. “It’s not a succeed or fail situation. It’s a ‘do this in memory of what happened and in recognition of those who contributed,’ and just understanding the effort that went into it and coming together as a community to celebrate that.”

Community members who want to participate in the memorial can show up to the gym at any point during the event. If there is a stair climber available, the challenge is available. While slots are set up in 60-minute increments, Williams said there is not a set time to finish the climb.

“If someone needs to take a break partway through, of course, they’re welcome to do so,” William said. “But generally, within 60 minutes we anticipate the challenge can be completed. If you complete it faster, that’s awesome. If you complete a little bit slower, that’s okay as well.”

In addition to everyday citizens, the first responders of Weaverville have also been invited to participate in the memorial.

“We’re in touch with the Weaverville Fire Department, so we’re hopeful that some firefighters themselves will be in attendance in full gear,” Williams said.

Those who finish the challenge will have their name written on a certificate of completion and added to a display at Workout Anytime.

If you like the idea of the memorial but feel nervous about the climb, you aren’t alone. Williams will be attempting the 110 flights for the first time, too.

“This will be a big challenge for myself, but, you know, with the motivation that’s behind it, I feel confident,” Williams said “I’m excited to see who else shows up for it and the coming together that will inevitably occur.”
